Many have considered the Best actress nominees at the 35th Japan Academy Prize to be one of the strongest and most competitive - Rie Miyazawa won for Pale Moon, but Chizuru Ikewaki (The Light Shines Only There), Mao Inoue (Snow White Murder Case), Fumi Nikaido (My Man) and Sakura Ando (0.5 Mm) gave award-winning performances too. Except for Miyazawa, the actresses mentioned are part of the 2015 Best Actresses hitlist.

Here's the racap of last year, culminating in the launch of the 2015 edition...
Fumi Nikaido's well-rounded acting credential proved she is Japan's best actress, among others. Four of her most recent movies (My Man, Hibi Rock, The World of Kanako and Au revoir l' ete) are varied and enough to offer Nikaido with the challenge to come up with performances worthy of awards and acclaim. Which is what actually happened, as she got a Best Actress nom for My Man. Two or three years ago, only a few J-movie/drama watchers knew her or familiar with her work, but after Sono's Himizu, Nikaido has nowhere to go but up!
In the same case, Sakura Ando's latest projects kept her on "acclaim" mode, winning Best Actress trophies and beating Miyazawa (the recipient of Best Actress at Japan Academy Prize). I am also aware that many of our visitors and even friends are not familiar with Ando. But if you're interested, you may want to look up these titles - Homeland, For Love's Sake and Love Exposure.
Mao Inoue's Snow White Murder Case and Chizuru Ikewaki's The Light Shines Only There remain my favorite performances for 2014.
Special mention also goes to: Anne Watanabe-Higashide, Masami Nagasawa, Erika Toda, Mirei Kiritani and Kou Shibasaki.
